K-Beauty's Explosive Growth on Shopee: Doubling Global Rates!

Edited by Don Kim, KNSUNCLES Inc.

This post provides a concise and engaging overview of K-Beauty’s explosive growth on Shopee, where the category is expanding at more than twice the global rate. It highlights the unique opportunities and challenges for Korean beauty brands in Southeast Asia, explores key consumer trends and market insights, and offers essential strategies for brands aiming to succeed in this dynamic region.

K-Beauty's Explosive Growth on Shopee: Doubling Global Rates!

K-Beauty's global phenomenon is undeniable, and data from Shopee Korea reveals an astonishing trend: K-Beauty is growing more than twice as fast on the Shopee platform compared to global Shopee growth rates! This remarkable surge is particularly evident among new K-Beauty brands, signaling immense potential that still outpaces current supply.

According to Shopee Korea, "The growth rate of the K-Beauty category on the Shopee platform is more than double that of global Shopee, and the growth of new brands is particularly striking. The growth of K-Beauty is astounding, but we still believe that supply is less than demand, which is why we held this summit."

Why Southeast Asia is a K-Beauty Powerhouse

Southeast Asia stands out as a particularly strong market for K-Beauty, and there's a clear reason why. They explain, "In other markets, brand recognition is paramount, but in Southeast Asia, a 'K-Beauty' branding layer is already established. This allows individual brands to easily build upon that foundation, leading to a relatively higher chance of success."

They note that in the Southeast Asian market, K-Beauty is perceived by consumers as offering "high functionality at an affordable price" and having a "youthful image." Indeed, buyers in the 10-30 age group significantly outnumber those over 40, indicating high growth potential for the future.

Key Markets & Category Insights

Vietnam and Thailand are highlighted as priority markets in Southeast Asia. "In terms of transaction volume, the Vietnamese market is the largest, while Thailand is a market where K-Beauty sales are relatively small compared to the local market size, which is a pity," they stated. However, they added, "K-Beauty's average transaction value in Thailand is higher than local brands, so there's much more room for growth in the future."

While skincare dominates K-Beauty sales in terms of order volume, makeup shows significant potential. They analyzed, "While K-Beauty has the largest share in skincare based on order volume within Shopee, makeup has a relatively low penetration rate but boasts an 81% growth rate. Vietnam and Thailand are regions with significant room for makeup market expansion."

Essential Strategies for Southeast Asian Success

  • Hydration is Fundamental: The most crucial message brands should convey in the Southeast Asian market is "hydration." The hot weather in Southeast Asia accelerates skin moisture loss and causes skin barrier damage, making hydration the most basic and important need for consumers in this region. Serums and gel-type formulas are particularly appealing and show strong growth.
  • Safety & Trust: Beyond efficacy, there's a strong demand for safety and reliability. Dermatologist-tested claims are noticeably increasing in the Southeast Asian market, and popular products are often based on fundamental ingredients while delivering a differentiated message of trust through dermatological certifications.
  • Key Ingredients: Beyond hyaluronic acid, ingredients like beta-glucan and glutathione, known for both stability and efficacy, are gaining attention. Glutathione, emerging as a next-generation brightening ingredient, is driving innovation in brightening products through its purity, stability, and complex combinations.
  • Gentle Formulas & Sensory Experience: The spread of high-performance ingredients also fuels demand for low-irritation formulas. Sensory experiences like rapid absorption and lightweight feel significantly influence product choice. Brands should seek opportunities for product innovation by maintaining efficacy while enhancing texture satisfaction.
