Edited by Don Kim, KNSUNCLES Inc.

This post provides a concise and engaging overview of the latest trends in Korea’s cosmetics export market for global buyers. It highlights why K-beauty products are attracting worldwide attention, the innovation and quality behind Korean brands, and the expanding opportunities in emerging markets—supported by up-to-date export data and real industry insights.

Summary

In the first half of 2025, Korea’s cosmetics industry achieved its highest-ever export performance, once again proving the global power of K-beauty. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea’s cosmetics exports from January to June 2025 reached $5.51 billion (provisional), a 14.8% increase year-on-year and a new all-time high. Korean beauty products are now exported to 176 countries, further expanding K-beauty’s global footprint.

Key Export Markets and Growth Highlights

  • Strong Growth in the U.S. and Japan
The United States ($1.02 billion, 18.5%) and Japan ($550 million, 10.0%) posted impressive growth rates of 17.7% and 15.7%, respectively, leading K-beauty’s export surge. U.S. exports have more than doubled over the past five years, rapidly narrowing the gap with China ($1.08 billion, 19.6%). While China remains the top market, its share has dropped into the teens for the first time in five years, signaling accelerated market diversification.

  • Expansion in Emerging Markets: Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America
One of the most notable trends in 2025 is the explosive growth of K-beauty exports in emerging markets such as Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.

In Europe, Poland’s exports soared 121% year-on-year in the first five months of 2025, reaching $111.81 million and making it the first European country to enter Korea’s top 10 export destinations. France (up 106%), Ireland (88%), Belgium (51%), Italy (45%), Denmark (38%), and the UK (73.6%) all posted double-digit growth. Notably, France and the UK saw export increases of 158.3% and 73.6% respectively as of May 2025, reflecting surging local interest in K-beauty.

In the Middle East, exports to the UAE rose by 74% ($99.28 million), with strong demand for premium and natural skincare products, especially in GCC countries. The expansion of online channels and beauty salons has been a key driver of this growth.

In Latin America, countries like Brazil and Mexico are embracing K-beauty for its natural finish, lightweight feel, and innovative ingredients. Brazil, with its $30 billion beauty market, is seeing rapid growth in K-beauty’s market share, particularly in premium skincare and natural ingredient products through local partnerships and distribution networks.

This shift marks a successful diversification of K-beauty exports beyond traditional markets like China and the U.S. Factors driving this growth include increased exposure to Korean content, improved accessibility via online platforms, development of locally tailored products, and enhanced credibility through global certifications such as CE.

Export Trends by Product Category

  • Skincare Products
Skincare remains dominant, accounting for $4.11 billion (up 14.9%) and 75% of total exports.

  • Color Cosmetics
Color cosmetics reached $750 million (up 17.4%), with lipstick exports surging 42.9% ($70 million). Growth was strong not only in Japan, the U.S., and China, but also in emerging markets like Türkiye and Poland.

  • Masks, Personal Cleansing, and Hair Care
Mask packs ($280 million, up 33.4%), personal cleansing products ($270 million, up 21.5%), and hair care products ($220 million, up 11.8%) all posted double-digit growth.

The Global Competitiveness of K-Beauty

  • Superior Quality and Trend-Driven Innovation
K-beauty is loved worldwide for its rapid trend adaptation, innovative ingredients, reasonable pricing, and stylish design.

  • Brand Power and Hit Products
Brands like COSRX, Laneige, Beauty of Joseon, Medicube, and Anua are strengthening their presence in the U.S., Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe through localization strategies and digital marketing.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Export Support
The Korean government and regulatory bodies are actively supporting exporters with global regulatory compliance, market expansion, and local certification assistance.

In the first half of 2025, K-beauty is writing a new chapter in the global market with four keywords: quality, innovation, diversity, and market diversification.
